Pirating Movies in Queens

The NY Times has an interesting article about pirated movies. It's actually happening in the old neighborhood I grew up in. Pirating is another problem the filmmaker faces in distributing his or her movie. If you don't think it affects you you're wrong. Money made by pirating movies goes into the wrong hands, and never makes it back to the filmmaker. I remember working in NYC and seeing the vendors on the street selling their knock-offs.
Independent filmmakers could possible learn a thing or two about how these pirates work. As one filmmaker says the pirates have better distribution then the studios. It would be great if we could use the pirates tactics in our own DIY way of distributing you're own film. That way we would ensure that the filmmakers who made the film would actually get the the money he or she is owed. Interesting concept isn't it!

Megan (2022)

The film Megan is a sci-fi/horror film with a lot of dark humor, which makes the movie so interesting to watch.  I had to say this was not on my radar to see.  I thought maybe one day on cable or streaming, but my youngest wanted to see it and so I was game.  I'm glad I did see this and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was.  I should also say seeing this at he movies was a treat.  The direction, the cinematography, and the whole feel of the film gave me an appreciation of this film that I would not have gotten otherwise. Lee (2024)

Lee is a movie about the combat photographer Elizabeth Lee Miller  a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.  It's a fascinating journey told in flashback as she is interviewed by someone about her career and her times in Europe.  It's an extremely interesting journey and one that you'll find fascinating.  How Lee dealt with sexism, and being a women n a male dominated profession.  The film is shot as though it were shot during the late 40's in color using the stocks they had in the 40"s.  The Germans shot in Agfa color while the American's shot in Kodachrome, but in the film Lee is shooting Black and white stills since that was the prevalent stock of the day. Yet the photography of the film feels like post war Agfa film stock   The film was directed by Ellen Kuras who is a cinematographer of some noted films such as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", my favorite "Summer of Sam", ...

Laundrea Thomas

I just found out that Ms Laudrea Thomas died on August 9th of this year in Los Angeles California. It seems that she took her own life. She was 32 and she was way too young to leave this earth. I'm not going to say that I knew Ms Thomas very well. She was in my movie "Deadly Obsessions", and she was a pleasure to work with. I had hoped some how that someday we would work together again because it's so hard to find real good talent who have a passion for what they do. To say that I was taken a back by this news of Laundrea's death is an understatement. I can still remember Laundrea's first day of shooting Of "Deadly Obsessions" it seems that she had car problems and her car broke down on the PA Turnpike on the day she was suppose to check in to shoot her scenes. Her father managed to rescue her, and drive her to the hotel where I had some of the cast & crew staying. Laundrea still made it on time and even brought some props that she thought we cou...
