Superman (2025)


Took the family to see this & it was my oldest second viewing after he saw it with his buddy and his family.  It is the most anticipated movie to come out this year.  Directed by James Gunn and a film responsible for re-launching the DC universe, so no pressure for DC at all.  Distributed by Warner Brothers "Superman" is a breath of fresh air in an superhero movies.

Why you ask?  What makes this film so different then other Superman that have proceeded it?  New cast, new storyline, and it includes other heros who they call meta-humans.  No origin story here.  We all know Superman's origin, so it's not needed.  What Gunn has done is create the ultimate immigrant story in Superman.  Born on another planet but raised in Kansas by his ma & pa.  It takes the familiar feeling of the outsider really being an insider, and not much different then us.  

I have to say that I was really upset seeing our hero being beaten up and mocked.  In this film he is battling Lex Luthor played by magnificently by Nicholas Hoult.  Boy did I hate him, and that's exactly what they want.  Louis Lane is played by Rachel Brosnahan, and here Gunn gives us a Lois who knows Clark's identity, and who is very much enamored with Superman.  Gunn shows the difficulty of the two of them maintaining this relationship, and why.  It humanizes our hero, and even though he seems invulnerable he isn't. 

I think this helps the movie, and you feel for our hero.  Though he is the mighty Superman he is still vulnerable to the slings and arrows of love.  

There is a whole slew of cast & characters that are worth talking about, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone.  I was surprised to even see a Green Lantern played hilariously by Nathan Fillion who really can be a bit of a how should I say "a dick".  

You'll love Superdog, and I can't say enough about David Corenswet who plays Superman.  It's a fun little romp in the DC universe, and I look forward to how Gunn expands on it.  There is a lot to pack in this 2 hour & 10 minute movie, but it will go by quickly and you'll want more.

In the end it's a great way to start off the universe, and I wasn't a DC fan, but am looking into it now and re-discovering characters I was unfamiliar with.  Like Mister Terrific played brilliantly by Edi Gathegi.

It's a great afternoon or evening to spend watching a film, and once again seeing our hero fly onto screens.  Superman is a character who brings out the best of us because we want to be like him.  He is an everday man or women trying to do right in the world.  Superman has been iconic since Jerry Siegel & Joe Schuster created him, and he still rings true even today's troubled times.  A good feel good film that will bring the kid in you again.

I highly recommend it, and I think that's why it's hitting a cord with audiences.  Our hero is familiar and loved, and he's here to help, and we all need heros, and seeing him again in this new universe is inspiring.  I highly recommend the film.

The film Megan is a sci-fi/horror film with a lot of dark humor, which makes the movie so interesting to watch.  I had to say this was not on my radar to see.  I thought maybe one day on cable or streaming, but my youngest wanted to see it and so I was game.  I'm glad I did see this and I was pleasantly surprised how good it was.  I should also say seeing this at he movies was a treat.  The direction, the cinematography, and the whole feel of the film gave me an appreciation of this film that I would not have gotten otherwise. Lee (2024)

Lee is a movie about the combat photographer Elizabeth Lee Miller  a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.  It's a fascinating journey told in flashback as she is interviewed by someone about her career and her times in Europe.  It's an extremely interesting journey and one that you'll find fascinating.  How Lee dealt with sexism, and being a women n a male dominated profession.  The film is shot as though it were shot during the late 40's in color using the stocks they had in the 40"s.  The Germans shot in Agfa color while the American's shot in Kodachrome, but in the film Lee is shooting Black and white stills since that was the prevalent stock of the day. Yet the photography of the film feels like post war Agfa film stock   The film was directed by Ellen Kuras who is a cinematographer of some noted films such as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", my favorite "Summer of Sam", ...

The 4:30 Movie (2024)

  So after hearing about the making of this film last year I was intrigued.  Full confession I'm a Kevin Smith fan.  I saw Clerks in 1994 three times and back in 1992 Robert Rodriguez's film El Mariachi set my brain on fire, so when Mr. Smith's film "The 4:30 Movie" was released I had to see it.  In the NYC area there was a show called the 4:30 Movie, which would host an assortment of different movies.  It was on channel 7 WABC NYC.  There would be Planet of the Apes week, or monster week, and a favorite of mine was Godzilla week.  Everything a young boy could imagine and hope for, so I was intrigued by Mr. Smith's film and why he called it "The 4:30 Movie".
