The Fabelmans (2022)

Image
The beginning of "The Fabelmans" starts with the family taking young Sammy to the cinema.  Apparently it was the director Steven Spielberg's first film that he saw with his mom & dad.  Throughout the film the movie shows how Spielberg became fascinated with moviemaking became a skillful storyteller.   I am familiar with Spielberg's career and throughout the years he has given many interviews about his growing up & making movies in his teens.   In fact it was a photo of him shooting a miniature of a spacecraft that made me interested in filmmaking.  A good documentary to see if you have time is literally named " Spielberg ".   It is the most definitive documentary about Spielberg & his family.  It is on HBO Max and it is longer than the film the Fabelmans by about 17 minutes.  The film "the Fabelmans takes some liberties on Spielberg's origin story as I call it, and I had no problem with that.  After all this i...

Ready Player One 2018

Image
It's been awhile, but I finally went to see a Steven Spielberg film in the theater which I have not done since 2008.   Don't get me wrong I did see "Lincoln" and "Bridges of Spies", but on cable and at home.  Spielberg's films are masterful, and when seen on the big screen you know why he is such a consummate director.  Spielberg's visuals are breathtaking, and he knows how to tell a good story.  He has been a favorite of mine since I was a teen and saw a picture of him filming when he was a teen.  It's taken me awhile for me to get excited about a movie, and I have to confess my boys were more excited seeing this film then I was.  After all it's about gaming, and what teen doesn't game? The movie is 40% live action, and the rest is CGI, and animation, but Spielberg blends the two so well it's hard to see where the line is drawn.  Since the movie is about a fantasy place called the Oasis, and the reality of a bleak future I think...

Jurassic World (2015)

Image
What can be said about Jurassic world that hasn't been said by other critics.  my youngest son said it in one word: "AWESOME".  We have enjoyed the series throughout the years, but I asked my boys which do you like, and they all go back to the original.  The others felt like repeats of the same they said, and my boys aren't half wrong.  When Jurassic Park came out way back in 1993 we as an audience had not seen anything like the film.  The effects were breathtaking, and the creatures were very real looking.  That is because a lot of hard work went into the effects.  Some of the CGI was groundbreaking.  So how does one out do the original?  Simple, you don't even try. Jurassic World is a movie that is unlike the others.  It's new.  The story picks up more then 20 years latter and tries to spin it's own tale.  It seems as though Jurassic World the amusement park has been running for 20 years and without one incident.  Wh...

Super-8 (2011)

Image
Okay first off I have to thank Steven Spielberg , and JJ Abrams for a trip down memory lane.  Super-8 brings back a time when things were a bit simpler, and life was a bit slower.  Now that I've dispensed with the nostalgia I have to say I really liked the film.  The ending seemed a bit corny to me, and yet it worked.  After all Super-8 is simply a B-movie picture that we all once watched on Saturday nights at the local drive-in.  Joe Dante did this in a film called " Matinee " way back in 1993.  What Spielberg and Abrams does in Super-8 is ratchet the action up a bit more then what Dante did.  Super-8 feels like a long lost Spielberg film when he started out.  It's a bit like " ET ", " Close Encounters of the third kind ", and " the Goonies " all rolled up in one.  Yet Spielberg is only the producer.  Super-8 was written and directed by JJ Abrams, and I have to confess I really liked the story, and best yet I loved the char...
