Maxxxine (2024)

The trilogy that Ti West has achieved is a trilogy that is quite unique and rests on the lead actress Mia Goth.   In X she plays dual parts.  One as the main character and then the murderous old lady.  What she does in X alone is really extraordinary.  What Ms Goth does in the film " Pearl " the second of the films, which is really a prequel of X is also well done.  All three films have a different feel and feel that they are from a different era's.  That is because of Ti West's skill as a writer and director.  In the prequel "Pearl" both Mia Goth And Mr West share writing credit.  This example alone shows how intertwined both Ms Goth & Mr West are to the story of Maxine and Pearl.  Both separate characters but one's that share a theme about seeking fame and the tenaciousness one needs to be to acquire it.  Of course the films take it to the extreme & that's the fun of these films.  It seems that the critics and the...

Taking Chance (2009)

Image
HBO premiered a film last week called "Taking Chance". It stars Kevin Bacon as a soldier who escorts a fallen comrade back home to be buried. The film is short, and long in emotion. The film is directed by Ross Katz who was a producer on "lost in Translation" & "In the Bedroom". The film is written by Katz, and Michael Strobl, and it is a credit to them on how well they get it. PFC Chance Phelps was a real soldier who died in Iraq. Lt. Col. Michael Strobl was the soldier who escorted him back home, and he wrote the story about his experience taking PFC Phelps back home. It is due to this that it feels so real. There is no statements about the war, or agenda in the film. All it shows is how we honor the men that have fallen, and how they touch our lives. Gone are the days where people spat on our soldiers and called them monsters, yet it still remains in our collective consciousness. After all it wasn't too long ago that this happened. Maybe and pos...

Rails and Ties (2007)

So this is weird. I didn't plan it this way, but it just worked out. After seeing Gran Torino I happened to catch Rails and Ties directed by Alison Eastwood on HBO. Since I did think it merited mentioning here I figured I review it. To say the apple doesn't fall to far from the tree would be an interesting comparison between Eastwood and her father. Rails & Ties is Alison Eastwood 's only directing credit so far, and she shows a lot of skill here. Though some would say that this type of film is more situated on the Lifetime network then theatrical release I beg to differ. Eastwood does a very competent job at directing the actors and getting good performances out of them. It is these performances that make the film worth seeing. Tom Stark ( Kevin Bacon ) and his wife ( Marcia Gay Harden ) are dealing with his wife's illness. Marcia Gay Harden 's character isn't dealing with the illness that is eventually killing her to well. Both Bacon & Harden's c...
