Living (2022)

Living is a movie out of time.  It takes place in the distant past of London in the 1950's.   Bill Nighy plays Rodney Williams a British civil service who receives a grim diagnosis, which changes his view on everything.  The one thing he questions is if he has lived a good life.  A life rich in experience and friends, and he comes to the conclusion that he hasn't and that change can happen, and redemption is possible. Bill Nighy is fantastic in the part, and he gives a quiet performance in this movie.  We are thrust into the characters dilemma early in the movie and the director Oliver Hermanus doesn't waste anytime in getting us familiar with the characters of the film.  I have always liked Bill Nighy's performances no matter what movie he is in.  He does a wonderful haunting performance of Rodney Williams.   The film makes you feel the monotony of Rodney routine.  It is his diagnosis that tips him into the so called pool of life ...

Pirate Radio (2009)

Would you believe way back in the 60's jolly old England gave about 30 minutes of pop music a day due to the fact that the government saw rock and roll as immoral, and lewd.  The answer to this was pirate radio .  These were actual ships that transmitted rock and roll tunes to the English while they were in international waters.  It was legal, and the these stations had about 25 million listeners. Notes on a Scandal (2006)

Image
I'm astounded to find sometimes the number of films that just seemed to pass me by. One of these films was Notes on a Scandal starring Judi Dench & Cate Blanchett . The film is a wonderfully salacious and psychologically controlling character piece, which showcases two of the film industry's most gifted actresses. The film is about a veteran high school teacher (Dench) who befriends a younger art teacher (Blanchett), who is having an affair with one of her 15-year-old students. However, her intentions with this new "friend" also go well beyond platonic friendship. Notes of a Scandal is like watching a car wreck. You want to look away, but you become too embroiled into the characters to look away. Dench is at her best, and Blanchett actually makes you believe why a women can become obsessed with a boy. Another actor who should be mentioned also is Bill Nighy as Richard Hart Blanchett's husband. He gives a very subliminal performance in the film and in ...
